Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS uses a rapidly changing magnetic field, generated by electrical coils outside the head, to induce weak electric currents in the brain. This can transiently cause or interfere with activity in specific parts of the brain where TMS is applied. It is a powerful tool for studying the function and interconnections of different brain regions. TMS at CUBRIC is principally performed by Dr Chris Chambers’ group.
The Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) is a world-class facility, featuring state-of-the-art brain imaging and brain stimulation technologies. These include:
- Two research-dedicated TMS laboratories
- Research projects investigating the neural basis of human perception, attention, and cognitive control, in addition to methodological development of brain stimulation techniques
- Three Magstim Super Rapid systems for the delivery of magnetic stimulation using a single TMS coil, or multiple coils
- Online eye-tracking systems for the monitoring of gaze and eye movements
- Cambridge Research Systems Visage system for visual stimulus presentation
- Piezostimulator system for mechanical tactile stimulation (from April 2008)
