Research Summary

My research focuses on five related topics: emotion, social hierarchy, intergroup relations, moral and political cognition/action. More specifically, I am interested in the way emotion regulates social hierarchy and how emotion and a person’s/group’s position in a social hierarchy influences moral and political cognition/action. In addition, I’m interested in how social hierarchy changes (social change). Finally, I have interests in applied (e.g., health and environmental) social psychology and the philosophy of social cognition.

Teaching Summary

I teach on the Level 2 (2nd year) Social Psychology II module (PS2007), where I lecture on emotion, attitudes, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and social change. I also teach on the Level 1 Introduction to Psychology module (PS1016), where I lecture on social psychology.

Research

Research Topics and Related Papers

In general, my research interest is in understanding how emotion and social hierarchy influence cognition and action. Central questions include: What factors facilitate and inhibit cognitions and actions that challenge/maintain social hierarchy? How do people think about change in social hierarchy? How does emotion influence moral and political cognition/action?  How does social power influence moral and political cognition/action? How does ingroup bias influence moral and political cognition/action? How does social power influence persuasion and argumentation processes? As an extension to the above work, I am also interested in exploring applied aspects of social psychology (e.g., health and environmental) and have an interest in the philosophy of social cognition.
